WINE TASTING
Tours & tastings are held daily by wine experts and members of the 4th generation of winemakers of the Markou family offer the chance to experience the Athenian terroir and taste ancient local varieties
The Markou family founded the "Markou Wine Museum” in 2005, which hosts their private collection of agricultural and wine -making tools from the 19th century and onwards, a unique space hosting wine tasting, masterclasses, educational programs of agrotourism; furthering awareness of the artisanal Athenian traditions of wine making and the idiom of the Attican Athenian terroir.
Here one has the opportunity to journey into the history of Artisanal winemaking and the Athenian agricultural heritage by exploring rare remnants of a recent past that seems so very long ago from the mid 19thcentury and early 20th century.
Our tours commence with a visit on the grounds of one of our Savatiano vineyard plots situated right next to the Wine Museum, the indigenous variety of the Attican wine country. We learn about the origins of viticulture and vine, bask in the sun and observe the non-irrigated, goblet formations of Savatiano growing amidst rosemary and thyme on the Attican argillaceous terroir.
We then head towards the exhibit hall, where the tour continuous, of the collection of agricultural and viticultural tools, early 19th until the beginning of the 20th century industrialization of winemaking machinery and oenological equipment of the era.
- We conclude at the outdoor patio of the Museum Garden, where seated on heavy wooden monastery tables we conclude with our selected wine tasting accompanied by cheese and baked goods assortments, we take in the aromas and the flavors as we discover the unique varieties of Greece.
